Anniversary signs get bought by two very different people, and knowing which one you are points you to the right sign.

The first is a couple marking their own anniversary. This tends to be personal and often intimate: their names, the year they married, a sign for a romantic dinner at home or a small celebration.

The focus is the two of them and their story, and the sign is usually something they will keep afterward.

The second is family throwing a milestone party for parents or grandparents, usually a 25th or a 50th, and often a surprise. This is a bigger celebration with a guest list, and the sign is a party centerpiece: a milestone number like 50 Years, the parents’ names, or the year they married glowing behind the cake or the photo wall. The adult children planning it want something that reads across a room full of guests and gives everyone a spot for photos.

Different anniversaries call for different signs, and the traditional milestone themes give you a natural color cue.

First anniversary

The first year together. A Happy Anniversary sign or a names-and-year sign both work, and this is usually a couple’s own intimate celebration rather than a big party. Warm white keeps it romantic. A names sign bought now becomes the keepsake for every anniversary that follows.

Early milestones (5th and 10th)

The building years. Names-and-year signs and Happy Anniversary signs both fit, and a milestone number starts to feel celebratory at the 10th. Still often an intimate or small-gathering celebration. A good point to invest in the permanent names sign if you have not already.

Twenty-fifth, the silver anniversary

A major milestone, and often the first one that becomes a real party, frequently thrown by the couple’s children. The silver theme gives you a color cue: cool white or silver tones suit the occasion. A 25 Years sign with the couple’s names makes a centerpiece, and the party usually wants a photo backdrop.

Fiftieth, the golden anniversary

The big one. A golden anniversary is usually a family celebration for grandparents, planned by the children and grandchildren. The gold theme points to warm amber or gold tones. For an elegant golden anniversary at a nice venue, hand-bent glass neon in a warm tone is worth considering for its softer, vintage glow, though LED in warm amber gives you the same look with more flexibility.

Sixtieth and beyond

Legacy anniversaries. These are family gatherings that celebrate a lifetime together. A milestone number, the couple’s names, or their Est. year all work, and the sign becomes something the whole family remembers from the day. Warm white or gold tones suit the occasion.

Sizing, Color, and Placement

Size the sign to the celebration and to where it will live afterward.

Party photo backdrop: 24 to 40 inches, large enough to read across the room and frame people in photos. Romantic dinner or home centerpiece: 18 to 30 inches, sized for an intimate space. Photo wall: 24 to 40 inches. Table or accent piece: 18 to 24 inches.

Color sets the tone and can follow the milestone. Warm white is romantic and timeless and works for any anniversary and any room afterward. Cool white or silver tones suit a 25th. Warm amber or gold suits a 50th. Match a party color theme where it makes sense, but if the sign will live in the home afterward, warm white tends to age best on the wall.
