Custom Waterproof Neon Signs for Outdoor and Patio Spaces

Custom waterproof neon signs for outdoor and patio spaces are IP67-rated LED neon signage built to handle rain, sun, wind, and temperature exposure. Echo Neon makes waterproof outdoor signs and has been building them since 2015. Indoor signs are not weatherproof and will not survive outside. If the sign goes outdoors, it needs IP67 construction.

The most common outdoor builds are personalized family name signs for the patio, pool area signs, outdoor bar and BBQ signs, welcome signs for the front porch, and garden wall accents. An outdoor neon sign looks different during the day than it does after dark, and the way it handles both matters more than most buyers expect.

Thinking about where outdoor signs go, how they look in sunlight vs at night, what IP67 weatherproof actually means in practice, how to size and mount on outdoor surfaces, and which outdoor spaces we build for? You’ve come to the right place. To browse other use cases, see all our shop by use case options.

How to Order Your Outdoor Sign

Ordering a custom outdoor sign comes down to three steps and one critical note.

1. Design

First, design the sign. Use the custom sign builder to type your text, choose your font, pick your color, and set the size. The builder shows a live preview as you go. For logos, images, or complex designs, upload your file or contact our design team.

2. Production

Second, we produce the sign. Production typically takes one to three weeks depending on complexity and current order volume.

3. Delivery

Third, the sign ships. Standard shipping is free on all orders.

The critical note: specify outdoor and IP67 weatherproof construction at the order stage. An indoor sign shipped without IP67 construction will not survive outside. This is the most important decision in the ordering process for an outdoor sign. If the sign goes outside, it needs IP67. Before you order, know where your outdoor power outlet is and plan how the cord will route from the sign to the outlet.
If you want a dimmer for day-to-night brightness control, add one at the order stage. Outdoor signs make popular gifts for housewarmings, Father’s Day, birthdays, and holidays.

Where Outdoor Signs Go

Outdoor sign placement depends on the space, the wall surface, and the degree of weather exposure

The patio wall is the primary outdoor placement. A family name sign, a welcome sign, or an entertaining phrase on the patio wall anchors the outdoor living space. Covered patios (with a solid roof overhead) protect the sign from direct rain and sun while keeping it visible to everyone in the seating area. Uncovered patios work too with IP67 construction, but the sign faces full weather exposure.

The pool area and poolside walls are high-demand placements. Pool signs face splash exposure from the water, sprinkler overspray, and high humidity. IP67 handles all of this. Mount the sign above the splash zone on a fence, column, or pool house wall. Pool rules, fun pool phrases, and family name signs are common builds.

The outdoor bar and BBQ area gets its own sign. A bar name, a grill phrase, or an outdoor kitchen sign above the cooking or serving area. If the bar is a major feature of the outdoor space, see our pub and nightclub neon signs page for deeper bar signage guidance.

The deck and pergola area is a partially covered outdoor space. A sign under a solid pergola roof gets protection from direct rain and sun. A sign on an open deck faces full exposure. Both work with IP67 LED. A fully covered pergola with a solid roof (not slats) is one of the few outdoor placements where glass neon could work.

The front porch and entryway gets a welcome sign, family name, or address sign. A covered porch protects the sign from direct weather. An uncovered entryway needs IP67 LED.

Garden walls and fence lines get accent signs. Lower mounting height. Full weather exposure on most fences. IP67 required. Smaller signs (18 to 30 inches) work for garden and fence placement.

Exterior house walls and building facades get building identification or decorative accent signs. Full weather and sun exposure. IP67 LED required. For commercial building exterior signage, see our storefront neon signs page.

Day and Night: How Outdoor Signs Look in Sunlight vs After Dark

An outdoor neon sign has two visual modes that indoor signs do not. How the sign handles both is the most important thing to understand before ordering.

During daylight, the sign competes with sunlight. The glow is less visible in direct sun. Depending on the brightness and color, the sign may read more as a piece of acrylic wall art than as a glowing neon sign. This is not a defect. It is the reality of any light source in direct sunlight. The sign is still there, still visible, still decorative. It just does not glow the way it does after dark.

At dusk, the sign begins to come alive. As ambient light drops, the neon glow becomes more visible. After dark, the sign delivers its full visual impact. This is when outdoor neon looks its best. The glow fills the space, and the sign becomes the dominant visual element on the wall.

Color choice affects daytime visibility. Bold colors (red, blue, green) hold their visibility in daylight better than warm white or soft pastels, which can wash out in bright sun. If the sign needs to read clearly during afternoon gatherings and daytime entertaining, a bolder color holds up better. If the sign’s primary job is evening and nighttime ambiance (dinner parties, pool nights, evening entertaining), warm white and soft colors work because the sign comes alive after dark regardless of color.

A dimmer lets the owner adjust brightness across the day-to-night transition. Higher during the twilight shift when the sign is competing with fading daylight. Lower after full dark when the sign is already the dominant light source and does not need to be at full power. Add a dimmer at the order stage.

IP67 Weatherproof: What It Means and What It Does Not

IP67 is the waterproof rating that matters for outdoor neon signs. Every neon sign company selling outdoor products says “IP67 waterproof.” What they do not explain is what the rating actually covers and what the installation needs to match.

IP67 means the sign is rated for complete dust ingress protection and temporary water immersion up to one meter for 30 minutes. In practical outdoor terms: the sign handles rain, pool splash, sprinkler overspray, humidity, condensation, and accumulated moisture from fog and dew. It does not handle permanent submersion. Do not mount the sign underwater in a pool or fountain.

The IP67 rating covers the sign itself: the LED tubing, the sealed connections, and the acrylic backboard. The power supply should also be weatherproof rated. The connection point where the power cord meets the sign and the outlet is a weak point if not properly sealed or routed. Use a weatherproof outdoor outlet with GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) protection. Route the cord along the wall, through conduit, or behind the mounting surface. Keep the cord out of standing water and foot traffic.

The sign is weatherproof. The installation needs to match. If the sign is IP67 but the power cord hangs loose in a puddle or the outlet is not rated for outdoor use, the installation is not weatherproof even though the sign is.

Sizing and Mounting for Outdoor Spaces

Outdoor signs are viewed from farther away than most indoor signs. Size accordingly.

Patio and backyard wall signs work at 30 to 48 inches. Visible from across the patio, from the seating area, and from the yard.

Pool area signs work at 30 to 48 inches. Mount above the splash zone even though IP67 handles splash. Visible from the pool and from the lounging area.

Front porch and entryway signs work at 24 to 36 inches. Welcome signs, family names, and address signs.

Outdoor bar and BBQ area signs work at 20 to 36 inches. Above the bar or above the grill.

Garden and fence signs work at 18 to 30 inches. Smaller accent signs for lower mounting heights.

Exterior wall signs scale to the building and the viewing distance. 36 to 60 inches for residential. Larger for commercial (cross-link to storefront page).

Outdoor mounting surfaces differ from indoor drywall. Echo Neon signs ship with pre-drilled holes in the acrylic backboard. For brick, use masonry anchors or tapcon screws. For stone, use masonry anchors. For stucco, use stucco-rated anchors or toggle bolts through the backing. For wood fencing, use screws directly into the wood. For vinyl siding, use siding hooks or mount a block behind the siding. For concrete block, use concrete anchors. Choose fasteners rated for the surface and secure against wind. An outdoor sign needs to resist wind lift and lateral pull that indoor signs never face.

LED for Outdoor. Glass for Covered Spaces Only

LED neon flex with IP67 is the only format for exposed outdoor installation. Glass neon is not IP67 rated and is not suitable for direct weather exposure. Rain, wind, temperature swings, and UV will damage an unprotected glass neon sign outdoors. Glass works in fully covered outdoor spaces where direct weather does not reach the sign: under a solid pergola roof, inside a screened porch, inside a gazebo, or under a deep covered patio with a solid overhead structure. In these protected spaces, glass adds warmth that LED does not fully replicate. But the space must be fully covered. A pergola with open slats that let rain through is not covered enough for glass. If there is any doubt about weather exposure, LED with IP67 is the safe choice. Echo Neon makes both formats. To learn more about hand-bent neon, see our glass neon process.

Outdoor Spaces We Build Signs For

Different outdoor spaces have different weather exposure, wall surfaces, and sign needs.

Patios and covered outdoor living areas

The primary outdoor sign placement. Family name signs, welcome signs, entertaining phrases. Covered patios protect the sign and extend longevity. Uncovered patios work with IP67 LED. Covered patios with a solid roof overhead are one of the few outdoor placements where glass neon could work if the sign is fully protected from weather.

Pool areas and poolside spaces

Splash exposure, humidity, pool chemical atmosphere. IP67 LED handles all of it. Mount above the splash zone on a fence, column, or pool house wall. Pool rules, fun phrases, and family names. Visible from the water and from the lounging area.

Outdoor bars and BBQ areas

Bar name, grill phrases, outdoor kitchen decor. The sign brands the cooking and serving area as its own destination within the outdoor space. IP67 LED for weather exposure. For deeper bar signage guidance, see our pub and nightclub neon signs page.

Decks and pergolas

Partially covered or fully covered. A solid pergola roof protects the sign from direct rain and sun. An open deck faces full weather. Both work with IP67 LED. Glass is only an option under a solid roof with no rain penetration.

Front porches and entryways

Welcome signs, family names, and address numbers. A covered porch provides weather protection. An uncovered entryway needs IP67 LED. The sign is the first thing visitors see when they approach the house.

Gardens and fence lines

Accent signs at lower mounting heights. Fence-mounted signs face full weather. IP67 LED required. Smaller sizing (18 to 30 inches) for the garden scale. Garden signs add a glow to the landscape after dark.

Exterior house walls

Building identification, address signs, decorative accents on the house exterior. Full weather and sun exposure. IP67 LED. Size to the wall and the viewing distance from the street or driveway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, with IP67 waterproof construction. Indoor signs are not weatherproof and will not survive outside. Specify outdoor at the order stage. IP67 handles rain, dust, splash, humidity, and condensation.

IP67-rated LED neon handles rain, pool splash, sprinkler overspray, and humidity. It does not handle permanent submersion. Mount above the splash zone near pools. Use a weatherproof power supply and an outdoor outlet with GFCI protection.

Less visible in direct sunlight than after dark. Bold colors (red, blue, green) hold daytime visibility better than warm white. The sign comes alive at dusk and looks its best after dark. If daytime visibility matters, choose a bolder color.

Patio and backyard: 30 to 48 inches. Pool area: 30 to 48 inches. Front porch: 24 to 36 inches. Outdoor bar: 20 to 36 inches. Garden and fence: 18 to 30 inches. Size for the viewing distance and wall space.

Brick (masonry anchors), stone (masonry anchors), stucco (stucco anchors), wood fencing (screws), vinyl siding (siding hooks), concrete block (concrete anchors). Pre-drilled holes in the acrylic backboard. Secure against wind.

Use a weatherproof outdoor outlet with GFCI protection. Route the cord from the sign to the outlet along the wall or through conduit. The sign is IP67 waterproof, but the power connection needs to be weatherproof too.

Glass neon is not IP67 rated and is not suitable for exposed outdoor installation. Glass works only in fully covered outdoor spaces (under a solid pergola roof, screened porch, or gazebo) where direct weather does not reach the sign. For any exposed outdoor placement, LED with IP67 is required.

LED neon flex is rated for approximately 40,000 hours. Outdoor signs may run longer daily hours if left on overnight. At 8 to 12 hours daily, that is roughly 9 to 14 years. Covered placement extends longevity by reducing UV and weather exposure.

Yes. Personalized family name signs, welcome signs, and pool area signs make popular gifts for housewarmings, Father’s Day, birthdays, and holidays. Specify outdoor and IP67 at the order stage.

Build a Sign That Works Outside

Custom waterproof neon signs are how a lot of patios, backyards, pool areas, and outdoor living spaces get their identity. Echo Neon makes IP67 waterproof LED signs built for real outdoor conditions and glass neon for fully covered outdoor spaces where weather does not reach. A family name sign on the patio wall. A fun phrase by the pool. A bar sign above the grill. We have been building outdoor signs since 2015, across patios, pools, decks, porches, gardens, outdoor bars, and exterior walls. Specify outdoor at the order stage. Indoor signs do not survive outside.
